200 Widows and Counting

Ruining of villages due to liquor is a common say, but it is hard to believe that it actually happens. But Brambe village of Jharkhand is such a village, where now only widows live. Bajrang, the husband of young Chumani Uraon of the same village, committed suicide, as Chumani did not permit him to drink. Now Chumani is left with the memories of Bajrang. He lives in the village of Brambe with his five-year-old daughter Alka. Chumani did not have any clue that a small confrontation regarding liquor will desert her life in such a way.

She has now become a peon in Central University, Jharkhand, so that she can bring life of her daughter and mother-in-law back on track. Chumani and Bajrang remained only eight years together. Chumani Uraon is one of the dozens of widow in the village of Brambe, whose husbands have died due to liquor.

This village which is about 25 kilometers away from the jharkhand capital Ranchi, there are about 900 houses and 200 hundred of them are of those women whose husbands have died due to liquor. Sohadra Tigga, Vishun Devi, Sukri Urien, Mahi Urien, Sukru Tigga’s husbands have also died due to liquor. Some died due to illness and some because of accident in alcoholic state. Here every widow has its own anguish and the only cause is liquor.Vishun Devi of this village says that her husband died as he was a regular drinker and one day while returning to home he died on the way, and now she works as a labourer to meet the ends. There is no end to such stories in this village.

People in government departments say that in this village liquor is the main reason for the death of people in the early age. A number of awareness programs have been launched here and the scheme has been started there to connect people with self-employment. But the most worrying thing is that around 200 people have died due to liquor, and despite this also, the desire to drink liquor among people is increasing instead of decreasing.
