Those who die due to poisonous liquor are not to be blamed. They are the same kind of consumers, like English ones. If the liquor turns out to be toxic, the winemaker should be punished. But it often happens that the case gets closed and instead of sympathizing with the person who died he is termed as guilty.
Few days back, 21 of the nearly three dozen people who died after drinking poisonous liquor in Ranapar and Jeeyanpur have been given financial assistance of Rs 2.25 lakh by the state government , but in the Mubarakpur area in 2013, 46 people died after consuming poisonous liquor, and their dependents did not even get a single penny. This is the first special report, on the condition of the people who died in Mubarakpur, and in what situation their relatives are of now.

Adampur village of Mubarakpur
On entering the village, ahead of Adampur primary school,on the right side of the road is the house of Moti Chauhan, son of Lakhan Chauhan. Sutari Devi widow of Moti Chohan was sitting near the house and she was observing those who were passing by. The poisonous liquor had snatched her husbands life. Moti Chahan, who is 60 years old, has three children. All three work as labourers, and they have total of five Biswa’s land. When asked about economic aid, tears in his eyes started flowing, said nothing just nodded no in gesture. In the southern part of this village is the house of Ghurbhari alias Ghure Chauhan. The same person,which the police had termed as illegal liquor trader. Three person died from this house. He used to sell pouches, but he was not a liquor trader. Around the barricade placed on brick and the tin shed in which a buffalo was tied on the spot, the surrounding people told that this was Ghure’s liquor shop. The fact is that the Ghure had addicted to drinking himself, to borne the expenses, he used to sell ten twenty pouches to the people nearby, and used to make a couple of pouches for himself. Ghure’s wife said, that the first death in this village due to poisonous liquor was of Gopal.

Gopal’s wife Umrai is around 37 years of age.Five daughters Sushma, Pratima, Reshma, Seema, Karishma and three sons, Himanshu, Aman and Chhotu. She was pregnant when Gopal died. In the eyes of Umrai, all the scenes are still fresh. She said, like every day on that day also Gopal came to house after consuming liquor, and after some hours, complained that he was not able to see. We took him to the hospital but in vain. The light had disappeared from the eyes. He was wandering here and there with hands on his head, saying he had consumed lot of liquor but not such. The whole body turned black. After a while, sobbing he slept, and never got up. He used to work as a carpenter, spent all on liquor and nothing is left now.

A total of eight people were victims of spurious liquor in Adampur, including Rampyare son Vishwanath, 35 years of age. Of these, postmortem was performed on only three of them. The people of the village say that the administration tried its best to suppress the incident. Pressed to bury the dead bodies quickly. Most of them took the name of Naraon in response to the question as to where this liquor came from. Some people disclosed the name Mulayam. The widow of Ghura was also said that liquor was being sold from Mulayam’s house in Naraon. Shastri, the eldest son of Ghure, is 42 years old. Ghure had seven children, five girls and two boys The younger son Sanjay was 35 years old. Sanjay has three girls and a boy. Ghure, Shastri and Sanjay they all died. There was no one left. First, the old father died and then the sons. The villagers believe that both the traders and consumers are to blamed, because liquor was sold in the village, and people used to borrow liquor. Cash is required to drink from the market.

Jangbahadur Chauhan, former village head of Adampur, explains that the labor wage and farming are source livelihood of the people of this village. In this village with a population of around three thousand, half a dozen people are in government jobs. Chauhan and Muslims mainly live in this village, there is also a house Jaiswal family. In 2006-7, Adampur was awarded the Nirmal Gram Puraskar. We can also see toilets built in the houses. He says that 200 looms were there in this village. There was no shortage of business. In this way all the people started earning, and due to one storm all was over. When asked, what kind of storm, he said the fashion storm, after that our product was out of demand. Now there is no loom in the village, at that time there was lot of prosperity, now some people have started reading.
