It is surprising to know that in every six minutes in India a person dies due to liquor. Out of these, 75 percent are men and 25 percent of them are women. Thirteen percent youngsters in the age group of 20 to 39 suffer from disability and are prone to accident due to liquor. The World Health Organization, in its Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health-2018 issued last month, has asked to curb the use of liquor on account of these figures .This report says that most diseases and accidents are caused due to excessive intake of liquor.

In India, the per capita use of liquor has increased. In the last ten years, the per capita use of liquor was 2.4 liters, which has increased to 4.2 liters in men and 1.5 liters in women. According to the report, out of total number of deaths, 5.3% are caused due to liquor. SGPGI stomach specialist Prof. U.C Ghoshal says that the biggest cause of liver cirrhosis and pancreatitis is liquor.

Nearly 75 percent of the victims of liquor deaths are men. According to the report, the harmful consequences of liquor, affects not only those who consume it, but also their families and society. There are more than 200 diseases due to liquor including liver cirrhosis, cancer.

According to the report liquor abuse can result in short-term memory loss in youths aged between 12 to 22 years. According to the research, there is also a risk of brain damage along with liver malfunction. Not only this, continuous consumption of liquor can lead to brain disorder, heart attack and death. SGPGI Gastroenterologist Professor Abhay Verma said that 50 percent cases of liver cirrhosis are due to liquor. Apart from this, liquor is the main cause in 20% to 30% cases of pancreatitis.
