Hooch Tragedy in Assam

Poisonous liquor has created havoc in the country, recently 114 people died due to poisonous liquor in Saharanpur and Kushinagar in UP and Uttarakhand. This incident happened just a few days back and now in Assam 150 People have died while 400 others are sick. You can estimate of how big the business of illegal liquor is from this incident. Illegal and counterfeit alcohol mafias have spread across the country. Taking cognizance of the incident, the Chief Minister of Assam suspended two Excise Officers and ordered the Excise Commissioner to investigate.

Local police said that 124 people, including 36 women, died after drinking the allegedly poisonous liquor in a tea plantation in Golaghat districts and 331 others are sick. All these people used to work in Salmira Tea Estate. They drank alcohol on Thursday night after which all had fallen ill. Everyone has been admitted to Jorhat Medical College Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. An official of the district said that the data of deaths is temporary as of now and the number can increase.

The BJP legislator, Mrinal Saikia told, that more than 331 people drank the liquor and it is suspected that it was been bought from a single vendor. A medical practitioner, said that the deaths were caused due to poisonous liquor and the condition of most people brought to the hospital is serious. Saikia said that he has requested the district administration to investigate the matter and take immediate action. Except one, all the dead have been identified.

Police have registered more than 150 cases so far in this regard and arrested about 20 people and continuous raids are on. According to police sources, strict action will be taken against the culprits. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited the hospitals and ordered quality treatment and directed Additional Assam commissioner to investigate the matter.
