After the death of 114 people in UP and Uttarakhand, common people are curious to know about the liquor that kills as soon as it is consumed. The curosity of especially those people who drink alcohol have increased. In the villages of India, country liquor trade is not a cottage industry but in some areas it is. In this country were caste system is prevalent, some caste are known for this business. This is not for the first time that people have died due to poisonous liquor. The process of adulteration has been continuing for a long time. The funiest thing is that the treatment of toxic alcohol is also alcohol. According to expert doctors, poisonous alcohol or methyl alcohol cure is only ethyl alcohol. As an antidote of toxic alcohol, tablets are available in many countries but found no where in India. That is why in general hospitals doctors wait for alcohol effect to reduce, and then treat them with normal medicines.
Country liquor which is also called ‘raw alcohol’, there is nothing extraordinary in its chemistry. It becomes poisonous when raw alcohol is made more addictive. Generally, there is a trend of preparing raw liquor with jaggery and molasses, but in this urea and (besharam bail) leaves are placed so that its addiction becomes fast and long lasting. In the last few years, the practice of mixing oxytocin has increased in order to make alcohol more addictive and this oxytocin often causes death. Experts say about oxytocin, that due to it there are many types of diseases related to impotence and nervous system. Drinking alcohol made by this can cause irritation of the eyes, irritation and burning sensation in the stomach, and it can also cause blindness if consumed for longer period of time.
Mixing chemical substances such as urea and oxytocin in raw alcohol becomes methyl alcohol which actually causes death. According to chemists, chemical process becomes very fast as soon as the methyl goes into the body and the internal organs stop functioning, resulting in immediate death. But in some people’s body the chemical process does not get faster, if they are admitted to the hospital in time, their life can be saved.
The chemical substance which is sold as a country liquor is 95% pure alcohol, i.e. pure alcohol, it is also called ethanol. It can be prepared by the fermentation of sugarcane juice, glucose, mahua flowers, potato, rice, barley, corn, and any starch item. In the greed of making this ethanol intoxicating, domestic liquor traders mix it with methanol and it becomes poisonous, when there is imbalance in the ratio of the methanol. Methanol is a poisonous substance and surely it is not for drinking.
Methanol is the simplest alcoholic beverage according to chemistry. It is liquid on normal average temperature. It is used as fuel, to prepare mixture for other material, and in the preparation of antifreeze (liquids mixed with water in a cooling system to reduce the freezing point). It is a colorless and flammable material whose smell is similar to ethanol (drinking alcohol).
It is clear from the information given above that when and why alcohol becomes more poisonous. It is also good to know how the body reacts to normal drinking. Expert doctors say that normal alcohol is ethyl alcohol, while poisonous alcohol is called methyl alcohol. Any alcohol is converted into aldehyde in the body through the liver. But methyl alcohol is converted into a poison called Formaldehyde. This poison mostly effects our eyes. It can make a person blind if he has consumed too much alcohol, then it begins to form a poisonous substance called Formic Acid which inhibits the functioning of the brain.
