One third Vintage Scotch of the World Expected to be Fake

One-third of the vintage scotch whiskey samples were found to be fake in an investigation. The tests conducted at the Scottish University Environmental Research Center (Surek) confirmed that 21 out of 55 bottles of Scotch whiskey declared were either fake or were not distilled in the declared year. Experts believe that the price of fake bottles can be around £ 635,000. All malt whiskey specimens that were from 1900 or earlier were also been found to be fake.

After increasing concern about the production of counterfeit whiskey in the market, Geo-Chemists of Suerc tested rare whiskey with the world’s leading experts (RW101). Scientists randomly collected a series of different rare whiskeys obtained from the auction, private collection and retailers, and conducted their forensic analysis. To find out the ages of the whiskies in each bottle, Suerc measured the residual concentrations of a radioactive isotope of carbon which provides each whisky with its own radioactive date signature. This process helps them to establish the distillation years of whiskies to within a two to three year period post the 1950s. The rare whiskey that were found to be fake, was a bottle of Ardberg 1885, which was acquired from a private owner and a rare Thorn’s Heritage early-20th century blended  purchased from an auctioneer. As a result of the findings, RW101 stated that in the current market and existing collection, the fake rare whiskey is worth about £ 41m. This number is more than the entire UK auction market, which the company predicted to be more than £ 36m by the end of 2018. RW101 co-founder David Robertson said that the bottle of every alleged rare whiskey should be treated as fake unless it is proven to be genuine. “
