Not many days have passed when not only in UP but in whole of north India, there were only few person who controlled the liquor business in the entire region. The clout of these people was such that nobody even dared to enter this business. But in the past decade, U.P Government made such provision in the excise policy that new businessmen could enter into this trade.
The result of this excise policy is, that in the last few years, new businessmen have joined the liquor business in UP’s capital, Lucknow. But the old wine traders syndicate have not broken as yet. These people still dominate the market. Kanhaiya Lal Maurya, Secretary General of Lucknow Liquor Association, spoke about the realities of this business in a special conversation with Cheerrss.com.
According to him, which brand will be launched in Lucknow and nearby cities, which brand will be given more importance, which brand will be less sold, is still decided by this syndicate. Mr. Maurya says that the companies are bound to launch their own brand at the behest of the Syndicate. According to him, till this syndicate enjoys complete hold on these liquor companies, liquor consumers will rarely get their brands according their will.

Shri. Maurya says, previously Excise policies that were made, there were such provisions that there was dominance of a particular class. This was the same special class, which allotted liquor shops according to their will. After a lot of efforts, provisions were made in the excise policy that even this market could be open to everyone, now the situation is that twenty to thirty percent of new businessmen are operating in this liquor business. But they are not able to invest in big way. They are not getting the same facilities in this trade which used to be available to the old people. That is why the old Syndicate still dominates the market.
He said that the people of the liquor syndicate still hold shops in city’s major locations, especially the Model Shops. According to Mr. Maurya officials of Excise Department also do not leave any stone unturned in promoting this syndicate. The old system is continues, there is no proper cooperation for new businessmen. There is a need to change this arrangement, the behavior of Excise Department should be same towards all the businessmen.
