The use of liquor in the elections, is increasing day by day. Although there is no official data for this fact, the liquor seized in this election has broken all the previous records. It is evident now, that there is intimate relationship between elections and liquor. There is still a phase of election to go, and till now, 16 lakh 31 thousand 53 liters of English and country liquor has been seized in UP.
U.P Trending In Liquor Consumption
These figures are Rs 9 crores more than the last Lok Sabha election in 2014. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, liquor worth Rs.36 crore 37 lakh was caught. In addition, in the 2017 assembly elections, liquor worth 27 crore 24 lakh 54 thousand rupees was caught. These figures are of UP, and about Rs 260 crore liquor has been caught in the entire country and it is expected to reach the figure of 275 crore till the seventh phase.
U.P Government Liquor Earning Skyrocketed
According to the Election Commission data, liquor worth Rs 249 crore has been seized across the country till the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections. In the Lok Sabha elections of 2014, about 1 crore 61 lakh and 84 thousand 508 liters of liquor was seized. Accordingly, the consumption of alcohol in this election has gone up more than one and a half times over the previous elections.

The most interesting thing about these figures of the Election Commission is that the state of Gujarat, which has been a dry state for the last six decades, is where the most drugs and narcotics have been caught in this election. In Gujarat, till the fourth phase of this election, drugs worth Rs 524 crore were seized. According to this figure Gujarat is number one in terms of narcotics consumption.
Liquor Ban in Bihar a Futile Exercise
Sources claim that the quantity of country liquor caught in UP is less than that of the last election and the quantity of beer has increased. Sources also claim that Bagpiper,and 8 P.M, are two main brands which have been seized in large numbers. According to the sources, the vendors knew that elections will take place in April and these are the days when brands of liquor are not available in the market. Therefore, the old brands were kept aside safely, which were later supplied in the market.
