Team India Borrowed Champagne for Celebrations

In 1983, one year after the Asian Games in India, India won the Cricket World Cup at Lord’s. Then, for the first time on color TV, people saw Kapil Dev receiving the trophy on June 25th. But the story behind the scene is that after winning the World Cup, Team India celebrated their victory, by borrowing champagne from the West Indies team which they had brought for themselves.

In the final on June 25th, against team India was the West Indies team . The West Indies team was led by Viv Richards and had some of the fiercest fast bowlers of the World. Viv was capable of winning the game on his own. The West Indies team had won both the previous World Cups.Nobody had thought about their defeat. Indian supporters were also not sure that India could win the match. After the match the most talk about thing was the celebration in the Indian dressing room.

After winning the match, Kapil went to the West Indies dressing room to shake hands with all the players. There was complete silence in the room. They still could not understand that they had lost the World Cup. Kapil says that he saw champagne bottles there. In fact, India had scored only 183 runs, and during the innings break, West Indies management had ordered lot of champagne, but now they were of no use . Kapil Dev asked Lloyd, “Can I take some bottles of champagne from your room?” We have not ordered a single one. “Clive just gestured to Kapil and went and sat in a corner. Kapil and Mohinder Amarnath picked up the bottles and Team India celebrated the whole night.

Team India stayed at Westmoreland Hotel near Lord’s. Kapil Dev’s wife Romi told that the hotel and the area around it had transformed into mini-India.Celebrations continued the whole night along with bhangra dance and ladoos being distributed.Kapil’s wife was sitting in the stands before the match has started. She had to see the final. But as West Indians were hitting boundaries and the West Indies fans were making noise around him, Romi was feeling bad. So she went to his hotel room.

Kapil had said in an interview about this match, “We did not think about playing the semi-final and you are talking about the final. We had planned holidays with our own family. But when we defeated the West Indies in the first round, then we started feeling that we could do something.
