The beer consumption in Punjab is growing so rapidly that the Punjab government has to increase the quota of beer. The craze for beer in Punjab’s youth is showing an upward trend. Due to this, the excise and taxation department has to increase the quota of beer along with the quota of country and English liquor.
In Punjab, beer consumption has increased in comparison to other liquor brands, the biggest reason for this is, increase in the popularity of beer among younger generation. There are complain that last year’s beer is being sold on contractual liquor shops in Punjab. Also, because the price of certain brands of beer is not fixed, the contractors are selling beer on arbitrary prices.
The problem of drugs in Punjab is becoming so monstrous that this has been an issue during the recent parliamentary elections. Those people who do not have money for drugs, they are drinking liquor and those who do not have money even for liquor, they are using syrup-based medicine as intoxicants. According to a government data released last year, at least one person is addicted in two-thirds of the province’s home.
Despite this, the production of liquor in Punjab is increasing. According to official figures, the production of country liquor in the state was 17,657 liters in 1993, which increased to 29,445 liter in the year of 2010. The production of liquor in these years increased by 66% to 77%. On the contrary, there was only 60 percent increase in the food produced for the children.

Beer production has also set new records. Its production has recorded a huge increase of 209 percent in 17 years. Its production was 15,365 liters in 1993-94, which increased to 47,496 liters in 2009-10. It was 29 thousand liters in 2005-06, 34,292 liters in 2006-07, 36,502 liters in 2007-8 and 41,638 liters in 2008-09.
In comparison to this, according to official data in Punjab, only 185 liters of milk production has increased. Only 42.17 percent increase in animal feed has been recorded. The production of English liquor is also increasing in Punjab. Its production increased by 21435 liter i.e. 131 percent in 17 years.
