Battle Of Wines

The wine culture in India is increasing day by day, but two to three decades ago wine was an important part of Europe’s life. Which wine is the best, and which wine is less cool. It is surprising that a book has been written for a wine and that too of full 260 pages.

When one dealing with Commandaria, it is as if dealing with a world between myth and reality, so they should not in any way be surprised with everything heard or read. Besides no one would believe that for one single wine a whole book“Commandaria, the Legendary Wine of Cyprus”  consisting of 260 pages could be written.

The Battle of the Wines sometimes called “The Battle of the Blends” was a notable poem written by Henry d’Andeli in 1224 and tells the story of a famous wine tasting organized by the French king Philip Augustus. The organizer then of this first wine competition was not entirely foreign to Cyprus, on the contrary his ties to the island were important. And here the king to prove his seriousness and impartiality in the review of the wines had appointed a foreign specialist, non-French, to judge which of all wines is the best, and he was none but an English priest, who was a master in wine drinking.

Over 70 samples from France and across Europe, including Cyprus, Spain and the Mosul region, were tasted and judged .The priest classified the wines he tasted as either Celebrated for those which pleased him or Excommunicated for those that did not meet his standards. In the end a sweet wine from Cyprus widely believed to be Commandaria won the overall tasting and was awarded the supreme title of “Apostle”.
