On the eve of new year, the people of Lucknow spent around Rs. 5 crore on liquor. At the beginning of 2019, the most crowded places were either hotels or model shops. Sales of liquor decreased as it was Tuesday on the first day of the year, even then this figure of consumption is Rs. 2 crore more than that of last year. According to the excise department data, in two days of this year, sales of country liquor increased by 92 percent and that of english liquor by 70 percent in comparison to last year.

Lucknow liquor association’s general secretary Kanhaiya Lal Maurya said that this time sales were up by Rs 2 crore against the previous year. In two days, in Lucknow, country liquor of about two crore rupees was sold, while last year’s country liquor sales stood at about Rs. 1.25 crore. Similarly, English liquor of 2.25 crore and beer of Rs 75 lakh was sold. He said that while English liquor shops were found to be less crowded, the temporary bars at hotels were able to gather crowds. On the eve of new year, 60 temporary bar licence were given by Excise Department in Lucknow.

District Excise Officer Janardhan Yadav said that the department did not prepare daily data but according to the figures of liquor sales from December 25 to December 31, in these six days (2018) 5,25,870 bottles of English liquor were sold. Last year, 3,08,428 bottles of English liquor were sold in the same period.Similarly, in the last two years, 3.38 lakh bottles of beer were sold , while this year 5.94 lakh bottles of beer were sold. Country liquor recorded 92 percent increase over last year. Last year during these six days, 3.38 lakh liters of domestic liquor was sold, while this year, domestic liquor sales is 6.50 lakh liters.
