Last year U.P government earned Rs.33000 crores in the form of tax. But according to sources this figure actually goes up to about 49,000 crore.

Recently, 25 people lost their lives after consuming illegal liquor and that too from a government contract shop in Barabanki. Yet the government had not taken proper steps to improve the quality of liquor.

From the sale of country liquor, the government is earning crores of rupees as revenue. But at the same time, the dispute over the government’s policy is increasing steadily. CPM and many NGOs have raised voice against the government’s policy of increasing revenue through liquor.

The Excise Department of Bengal had targeted a revenue collection of 2700 crore rupees last year, which has been increased this year. An official of the department says that this year figure will cross 3000 crore rupees mark. Last year, under this head the earning was 2100 crore rupees . This year, the sale of English liquor has also increased, but the numbers of country liquor sales are surprising. On average, 2.7 crore bottles of country liquor were sold per month till March this year. But this figure has increased to 3.7 crore in November. In order to meet this growing demand, four bottling plants of country liquor have been established in the state during the last few months. Apart from this, at least 15 such applications are under consideration by the government. According to sources in the excise department of Bengal, last year, the revenue generated from the sale of only country liquor amounted to 544 crore rupees, which is expected to be 770 crore rupees.

Encouraged by the growing revenue of the Excise Department, the Mamta Government is in the process of allowing the sale of liquor bottles in the Bars, which will generate revenue of about 60 crore. In order to sell liquor from a big hotel, the government receives revenue of Rs 15 lakh on average every week. Now it has been decided to allow Bar owners to open an English liquor shop near Bar, that means drink liquor till the morning and while leaving take your bottle with you.
