Imported Barley Beer For Indian Market

For these summers, beer companies have made plans to do something special in the Indian market. Its effect can also be seen, and the craze for Dot and Craft Beer can be seen from Delhi to Bangalore. This time companies have also taken care of the Beer quality and can use imported barley for this season. Actually, the production of barley in India has come down on an annual basis.

Beer companies say that 60,000 tonne barley shipment has arrived in India from Argentina and the other is on the way. There is also the possibility of import of barley in the time to come. They say that this year the production of barley in the country is estimated to be 19.2 million tonnes less than the last year. Duty Free Import is for actual users. The Malting Industry is also importing barley on a large scale.

In India, Pramil Jindal, MD of Barmalt Malting Company said, looking at the arrival of barley crop in the market, there is possibility of lower yield this year. Barley production can come down by around 10 per cent this year. Due to high prices of maize and bajra, the animal feeding industry is also buying more barley and the affect of this can be seen on the prices of Barley. Malting Industry needs five to six million tonnes of barley for beer and distilled beverages. Barley is also used in food supplements, such as Horlicks, Bournvita and Boost, and other animal foods.

A Drunkard Who Never Consumed Liquor

The grain trader of a large multinational company said that the quality of imported barley is better and companies are giving 10 percent higher prices for the foreign barley compared to the domestic market. The average price of imported barley is at Rs 1,950-2,000 per quintal, whereas domestic barley is being sold at Rs 1,875-1,900 per quintal. Company sources say that Malting companies benefit from acquiring large amount of barley at a time. Traders are expecting orders from Indian companies for 5 or 6 vessels of 50-60 thousand tonnes of barley in the next quarter.

Although the arrival of new crop in the domestic market is at its peak, and all big companies like United Breweries, Barmalt, Glencore, Louis Dreyfus, Caufco and Kargil are buying barley on a large scale in Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. The supply of barley in proportion to the demand is quiet low, therefore foreign barley is being imported. In this way, there is an increased expectations of getting foreign barley beer in Indian market.
