The U.P Government has created a new record on earning through liquor. The government has collected excise duty of Rs 23,918 crore during the last financial year 2018-19, which is 38 percent more than Rs 17,320 crore received during 2017-18. After the BJP government came to power in March 2017, in the last two years UP’s excise revenue growth was 21 and 38 per cent respectively. Though the excise duty collection during previous two fiscal years, in the previous Government dropped by five per cent, and was down by 1.4 percent in 2016- 17.

The UP government claims that under the new Excise policy liquor smuggling and liquor syndicate have been kept under control to some extent, due to which there has been increase in the revenue collection. In fact in U.P, since the formation of the government by the BJP, more attention was paid on this matter. While addressing the media in on completion of two years of UP BJP government in Lucknow, UP C.M indicated that his government followed fiscal conscience, resulting in strong goods and services tax, excise duties were collected, and fiscal deficit (GSDP) was kept under three percent.

In January 2018, the UP government had announced a new Excise policy for ending the sovereignty of liquor syndicate and big businessmen in organized liquor retail sector. UP Health Minister and Government spokesman Siddharth Nath Singh had then said that the new Excise Policy would strike ‘Capitalism’ and monopoly in the liquor trade. He also spoke of bringing transparency. According to him it seems to be pretty successful.

Apart from this, it was compulsory to bid online for liquor shops . There are about 18,000 liquor shops in UP. In order to keep a check on illegal liquor trade, a trace and track system has been introduced to keep the real time table of goods . At the same time, the government has upgraded the vigil at inter-state boundaries to curb the smuggling.
