The capital of UP, Lucknow is famous for its mangoes and especially Dussehri. Till now only mango parties and exhibitions were organised, but this is for the first time, that the idea of making wine from Mango has evolved in somebody’s mind. The wine is ready and will be soon launched in the market. Lucknow based scientist who have made this wine, hope that one day this wine will compete with the wine made from traditional grapes. These scientists have combined three types of mangoes with little bit of intoxicant.
Lager Beer Popular Among Young Indians
UP scientists have made this wine with Dussehri, Langda and Chausa mangoes. India is the largest producer of mangoes and there are about one thousand variety of mangoes. Neelima Garg, who led the research team, said, “We thought that if France, Italy and Australia have established themselves in the wine industry, especially because they are grape-producing countries, why can not we use our specialty? . Mangoes are very common in our area. As the taste of every kind of mango is different, the taste of every wine will also be different.
All types of mangoes are found in India, from Safeda to Chausa and King of mango, Alfonso. The biggest challenge for the scientists was to make pulp of mango so juicy that wine could be made. Neelima Garg said, it is not difficult to develop yeast or fermentation in mango as sugar is very common in mango, which is the main source of alcohol.
Wine made from mango is sweet and light yellow in color. It consists 8 to 9 percent alcohol, which is slightly lower than the normal wine. In India, wine is made from grapes in western and southern Maharashtra and also in Karnataka. Lucknow scientists hope that the wine can also be made from blackberry and apples. Manish Kasture Dapoli is part this team. He wants to patent a wine made from apple. He will also patent the wine made from mango, but it will take time. He says he needs to make it more sumptuous now. Kasture says that grape wine is found in the whole world but this wine is good for health. It contains anti oxidation agents and vitamins.
Wine experts and Delhi wine club chairman Subhash Arora say that, wine can be surely made from mango. The question is of quality, flavor, deterioration and marketing. There are less opportunities for this. Wine is made from many fruits in Himachal but except for the apple wine, other are not worth drinking.
