In UP, it is forbidden to have more than 12 bottles in the house. So be careful, if more than 12 beer bottles are found in the house then it punishable under the act, you may have to spend three years behind the bars, and at least a fine of Rs 2,000 in addition. According to the United Provinces Act, 1910, of India, in U.P to keep more then 7.48 liters of liquor in the house is an offence. According to Section 60 of this Act, illegal transportation and manufacturing of liquor and to keep more liquor then permitted comes under the purview of fine. That means only 12 bottles of beer can be kept in the house, each bottle should be of 650 ml.

In September 2017, the UP government made some amendments in the Excise Act. Previously under this act, there was a maximum punishment of 2 years and maximum penalty was 500 rupees. But, after the amendments made in 2017, liquor smuggling from another state was brought under the category of non bailable offence. While crossing the border, if more then 1 unit of liquor is recovered from a person then it will be assumed that he is not taking it for consumption but to sell it. In this case, he can be sent to jail for 5 years.

The officials of Excise Department of UP have nothing to say about why the quantity of liquor kept in the houses at that time was fixed at 7.84 liters. An official of the department told that if the excess quantity of liquor is found in the compound, the action will be taken, the consignment can be canceled. The penalty amount will be 10 times the excise duty charged on the entire consignment. Considering the simplicity in revenue calculation, Rs. 77 per beer bottle has been fixed. The person who breaks the rules will be charged Rs. 2,000 or ten times the penalty of duty (whichever is higher). For example, if two dozen bottles are found in someone’s home, then a fine of Rs 18,480 will be imposed on him.
