Rahi Masoom Raza and ‘Wine of God’

Renowned writer Rahi Masoom Raza, who was in the headlines for writing the Mahabharat TV serial’s dialouge, used to drink ‘Cognac’, a famous liquor of his time. Famous French author, poet Victor Hugo, described Cognac as ‘Wine of God’. Rahi Masoom Raza wrote down the dialouge and scripts of dozens of films before and after writing Mahabharata. Rahi Masoom Raza was a highly respected and prestigious writer in Bollywood.

For the first time, when BR Chopra asked him to write the script and dialogue of Mahabharata TV serial, he refused. But till then the matter had reached the press and the news was everywhere that Rahi would write the Mahabharat’s dialogue. When the news was published, Chopra received many furious letters asking, is he not getting anyone else besides Rahi Masoom Raza who can write the Mahabharata’s dialogue.

BR Chopra sent all those letters to Mr.Rahi . After reading the letters Rahi got furious and he called up BR Chopra and said, that now he will write the Mahabharata’s dialogue. He also said on the phone that he is a real son of Ganga, and other than him, nobody can write Mahabharata’s dialogue.

Rahi’s nephew, Syed Asif Jah, has a different identity in Bollywood and is the producer of several films, tells that Rahi was a great man.When he used to write, he kept on writing, it didn’t matter whether it was day or night. Similarly, his drinking was also not affected.

According to Asif Jah, the house of Rahi Masoom Raza was open to everyone and the food used to be cooked 24*7, as there were numbers of visitors that use to come. Asif explains that wife of Mr.Rahi once told him that the cost of his kitchen was on an average 30 thousand rupees per month. Asif Jah while remembering this said astonishingly, that this was in the beginning of the nineties.

Rahi use to keep his favorite wine, Cognac with him, whenever he felt the need he use to take it out and drink. His method of drinking was very modest and in the film world where intake of liquor is absolutely normal, till the end nobody even came to knew that Mr.Rahi was a regular drinker.
