Alcohol is Life Threatening for Hepatitis C Patients

Alcohol consumption is harmful for health, almost everyone knows it. But a recent study has found that consumption of alcohol may increase the risk of liver damage and death due to hepatitis C virus. Most people suffering from hepatitis C are heavy drinkers. For the patients of hepatitis C, alcohol consumption is particularly harmful.

What does the Study Say?

The leading author of this study, Amber L. Taylor of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Viral Hepatitis , the disease fibrosis, rapid multiplication of bacteria in the organs of people suffering from hepatitis C ,and the disease causing obstruction to normal functioning of  liver  psoriasis increases rapidly. Because of this, drinking alcohol for them becomes a deadly activity.

This study report has been published in the ‘American Journal of Preventive Medicine’. In this, Taylor says that in 2010, people suffering from hepatitis C were the third major cause of death due to alcohol related liver disease.

Lack of information in people

The team studied four groups to know infection rate from hepatitis C. The first group was that never drank alcohol in life, the second used to drink alcohol first, the third group  was still drinking alcohol but not more, and the fourth group at the time were drinking more alcohol. Those who participated in this study were found to be infected with hepatitis C. Half of them did not knew that they had hepatitis C.

The new information provided by this study is helpful in putting light on the amount of alcohol consumed by Hepatitis-C infected persons. Those who have not been examined should be made aware about hepatitis C in order to prevent this disease from progressing and to begin treatment for saving the lives of those who are infected.
